It will have sufficient capacity to supply 29,400 homes in the Adelaide region of South Australia
Elecnor Group recently announced the start of construction on a large-scale battery storage and energy storage (BESS) system next to the Pelican Point gas-fired power plant in Adelaide, South Australia. The Spanish company is undertaking this project in partnership with Engie AU, Sungrow Asia Pacific, and ElectraNet. It combines state-of-the-art storage technology with fast-response generation, ensuring secure, flexible, and affordable energy.
The Pelican Point system will have a capacity of 200 MW / 400 MWh, enough to supply more than 29,400 homes in the region. The battery system will store unused electricity during periods of low demand and send additional energy to the grid during peak hours, helping to stabilize the regional grid. It is expected to be operational by mid-2027.
Furthermore, the developers are working with the local community and stakeholders to ensure that this facility generates a real and lasting impact for the region. The Kaurna people are the traditional owners of the land on which the Pelican Point storage system is located. For this local community, the Pelican Point BESS will provide a community benefit fund of AU$30,000 per year, as well as employment opportunities.
