Iberdrola installs a forest of solar trees at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Australia

An innovative design that allows for the generation of renewable energy while providing shade and blending into the safari-themed landscape

Iberdrola Australia has provided a forest of solar trees for a project at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria, Australia. Commissioned by Zoos Victoria, the project aimed to provide visitors on the walkway leading to the zoo entrance with shade on busy days and an opportunity to discover a new area in solar panel technology, installation, and design.

The Werribee Open Range already had 300 kW of solar power installed, but this was not visible to the public. Therefore, they sought an aesthetically pleasing display that would complement their African safari theme and demonstrate their commitment to solar energy and sustainability.

The solution provided by Iberdrola Australia incorporated 100% recycled wood that met the client's environmental requirements, while also providing a rustic aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the surroundings. Furthermore, the distribution of solar panels on each tree allows light to filter through, just as it would through a real tree. The company considered numerous details to ensure the necessary durability while maintaining the aesthetic appeal. In addition, the system also provides lighting via LED spotlights at the top of each trunk.

Finally, the structure's design allows the electrical wiring to be concealed, while the inverters, batteries, and other electrical equipment are housed in a custom-built shed designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.
