Internationalisation and innovation are Indra’s trademarks

This visit focused on Indra’s expansion process, its commitment to talent and its presence in Australia

On the first day of the Leaders’ Programme, the participants visited Indra’s Innovation Centre in the afternoon, where they were welcomed by Íñigo de Palacio, Head of International Relations. As was explained to the Leaders, the Spanish company is a world leader in technology and innovation consultancy focusing on security and defence, transport, telecommunications, energy, financial services and public administration. According to Íñigo de Palacio, Indra’s two hallmarks are its global presence and its commitment to innovation. The company’s internationalisation strategy was reinforced from 2000 to 2007, after which it was able to compete on an equal footing with the world’s top companies. In this regard, the diversification of its portfolio has evolved by decreasing the weight of Spanish operations and increasing revenues abroad. It currently has projects in 140 countries through 45 subsidiaries.

One of those subsidiaries is in Australia, a very important market within Indra’s expansion strategy. Since it secured its first contract there in 1992, the company has increased its foothold with offices in Brisbane and Newcastle on top of the headquarters in Sydney. Indra Australia has generated revenues of 50 million Australian dollars, has a 90-strong team and since 2011 has been a subsidiary of a parent company operating independently in the Australian market. Its contracts include one with the Royal Australian Air Force and another with Airservices Australia, an air navigation service provider. When asked about the company’s USP in the market, Íñigo de Palacio replied that “Indra’s success lies in offering the client customised solutions. Unlike our competition, we do not just take the technology that has worked in Spain to other countries; we modify it and tailor it to the needs of our partners and clients.”

At the end of the presentation, the Leaders discussed their impressions with Malcolm Monteiro, CEO of Indra Australia, who happened to be in Spain. After that, the group took a tour of Expo Indra, an interactive exhibition of the firm’s technology and projects worldwide which gives the audience a chance to experience first-hand how systems like Da Vinci - which operates Adif’s trains - work, as well as other technologies applied to sectors such as border protection and public health. Guided by the Head of International Relations, they had a chance to see the company’s commitment to innovation at work. Indra says innovation is a combination of technology and talent. “We have agreements with over 200 universities in order to foster talent and integrate it into a highly qualified team,” said Íñigo de Palacio. This team is currently made up of 43,000 professionals from 43 different countries. Further evidence of those two Indra hallmarks: innovation and a global nature.
