Located in Kwinana, it will transform up to 460,000 tons of waste into enough energy each year to power more than 55,000 homes
Our patron Acciona recently inaugurated Australia’s first operational energy recovery plant, located in Kwinana, Western Australia. The event was attended by the Premier of Western Australia and Member of Parliament for Kwinana, Roger Cook.
Operated by Acciona, this plant will transform up to 460,000 tons of non-recyclable waste per year into 38 megawatts of renewable baseload electricity, enough to power more than 55,000 homes. It will also recover more than 10,000 tons of metals annually from incinerator bottom ash, facilitating the reuse of valuable materials.
In the last three months, the Kwinana plant has already processed more than 90,000 tons of waste, equivalent to a reduction of 90,000 tons of CO2 emissions. The plant’s electricity generation has already become an important component of the renewable baseload power supply for the state of Western Australia.
Bede Noonan, CEO of Acciona for Australia and New Zealand, stated that "this important facility supports Western Australia's energy security and decarbonization goals, while creating a sustainable circular solution for waste."
Prime Minister Roger Cook, for his part, emphasized that the new facilities will contribute to the diversification of Western Australia's leading economy. "I want to congratulate Acciona on the opening of this energy recovery plant, which will provide low-carbon energy to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in southwest Western Australia. (...) I want to ensure that Western Australia's economy remains the strongest in the country, and projects like these will guarantee that."
Engineering and Design
Acciona Australia recently welcomed its 100th employee to its Engineering and Design team, a significant milestone in the business's rapid growth since its inception in December 2018.
Acciona Engineering and Design Managing Director Pablo Guardiola emphasized that "reaching 100 employees is a proud moment for the team and a testament to the strength of our integrated design and build model. Our growth has been driven by a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and the diverse perspectives our team brings to every project."
Designers are integrated into project teams from the tendering phase through delivery, enabling more efficient design reviews and procurement processes. This integrated approach has positioned Acciona as a leader in delivering complex infrastructure solutions across Australia.
