Iberdrola enters the networks business in Australia and acquires a battery project

Iberdrola Australia has announced its selection as a strategic partner to develop the VNI West transmission project, a key electricity grid infrastructure project that will connect the states of Victoria and New South Wales in Australia.

VNI West will consist of a 240-kilometer, 500 kV double-circuit transmission line that is crucial for ensuring a reliable energy supply and more competitive electricity prices in Australia. The interconnector will strengthen the national electricity grid, support the electrification of Victoria, and generate social and economic benefits for local communities.

During the first phase of the project, Iberdrola will work with VicGrid, Victoria's new transmission grid planning body, to define the critical elements. Following this, Iberdrola will submit a proposal for the project's execution, ownership, and operation. The projected completion date for construction is 2030.

Battery Storage

Furthermore, Iberdrola has also strengthened its presence in the Australian market with the acquisition of the Tungkillo battery storage project from the RES Australia group. Located in South Australia, the project represents an investment of €275 million. This infrastructure, expected to be operational by 2028, will have a capacity of 270 MW and a storage capacity of 1,080 MWh.

According to Iberdrola, the Australian system requires a significant increase in battery storage capacity to integrate new renewable energy capacity and provide flexibility to the system. The location of the Tungkillo project, in the south of the country, is ideal for providing this service.

Biodiversity Conservation Award

Finally, Iberdrola Australia recently announced that it has been recognized by The Australian Financial Review in its Energy Awards for its biodiversity conservation initiatives. The company has introduced a new population of northern ground squirrels (Petaurus norfolcensis) to the area near Orange. The project includes 12 months of monitoring with remote cameras, the installation of innovative and recyclable nest boxes, and the planting of 1,200 native species to restore the eucalyptus forest.

Iberdrola Australia is currently working towards achieving a net positive impact by 2030.
