Antonio Beaus, Director of International Development for Environment at Ferrovial, accompanied the Australian visitors of the Leaders Program on a tour of the EcoPark of Toledo. Together with eight transfer stations, the facility serves the entire province of Toledo (around 650,000 people), processing more than 250,000 tonnes of waste annually and providing coverage to 194 municipalities.
In addition, the EcoPark of Toledo is implementing selective waste collection services for municipalities, managing recycling centres in 40 municipalities and serving more than 230,000 residents of Toledo. It also provides other services such as street cleaning and sewer maintenance.
According to Ferrovial’s Director of International Development for Environment, this project—developed under a PPP model—optimises the use of resources contained in waste, focusing on recovery, composting and recycling.
The Australian experts toured the entire facility, first observing how trucks deposit waste (both organic waste and packaging) before it enters the separation system. This automated waste separation system has two processing lines, each with a capacity of 35 tonnes per hour, as well as another line for lightweight materials that cannot be reused as biological products.
During the visit, the delegation asked Antonio Beaus a number of questions about the plant’s technological operations, as well as about the shared management model with the province and its economic management.
The tour ended with a visit to the composting hall, which is completely enclosed and operates at high temperatures, where the fermentation and maturation phases take place.
The remaining materials that cannot be recycled are stored in a controlled landfill located within the plant’s facilities. This landfill produces energy both for the plant’s own consumption and for supply to the electricity grid.
